There’s a huge rage right now called “dry shampoo”. Basically it’s stuff you put in your hair when you don’t have time to shower and it’s maybe a little oily. Welcome to my life. I haven’t had time to shower since 1999 but I try to do it daily anyway.
A search on the internet, thanks to Al Gore, revealed dry shampoo for sale with prices varying between $9 to $25 dollars for approximately 3 ounces. I don’t spend that much on my hair products. My hair is already gray and I’m only 30 25 with no hope of having super model hair. I need spandex undergarments worse than I need $25 dollar dry shampoo.
So you know what my secret for oily hair is? Baby powder. Every single mom has a few jars of this stuff laying around especially since they now recommend you don’t use it on babies anymore but every single baby gift basket still comes with it inside. Plus if you don’t have any, you can find it at the dollar store. I don’t think you can find Bumble to Bumble dry shampoo at the dollar store.
So what do you do?
Pour a small amount into the palm of your hand. Start with a very small amount and just slowly add more as needed.
Rub your hands slowly together, spreading it all over your palms, until it looks like your hands have aged 20 years in the last ten seconds.
Every single line and wrinkle in your hands will be very prounounced. (You’re welcome).
Now take your hands and rub them, fingers spread, against your scalp. Rub lightly until all the white coloring is gone. I do this usually about three times in a row using small amounts each time depending on how oily and gross my hair was to begin with. I also used it today after swimming to break up some old product that was in my hair and give it some body.
If you use baby powder instead of dry shampoo you will save money, smell fantastic, and it gives your hair some great body. It is definately worth giving a try. After all, the worst thing that can happen is that you get granny hands for a few seconds.
Let me know if you try it and what you thought!

I actually don’t have any baby powder laying around (even though I have gobs of other baby paraphernalia). But my local drugstore has no dry shampoo and it’s $22 at my salon. This seems worth a try to me!
let me know how it goes! I hate salon prices! but I do love bumble and bumble products. It’s just not worth it though. My new favorite is a shampoo and conditioner from Avon that my MIL bought for me.
I’ve done this for years! It works. It’s great!!! I hate washing my hair a lot because it dries it out so bad. I have such fine hair, yet it gets so oily.
Baby powder works wonders!!! I must confess, I also have some dry shampoo, albeit Treseme’ (sp?), so it was only about $5. Works just as well, but doesn’t smell as good.
I knew you were smart.
She was my friend first so I take credit for her being smart.
I guess I’m going to have to give this a try. I wanted a way to stop shampooing every night without going full on no ‘poo but my hair is just too oily. I hope this works for me! Thanks for the tip!!
I hope it works for you too! Mine used to be a lot oilier (sp?) but when I stopped washing it as much it eventually kinda got used to it and now it does ok.
I put baby powder in my hair all the time.
uh huh. what else do you do with my stuff when I’m not looking?
We used this tip back in the 70s too. If you don’t have baby powder a bit of corn starch will work too. Either way you have to be careful because you can go from looking ok to looking like you borrowed George Washington’s wig before you know it.
