What Is Instagram Explained

My sister a few weeks ago asked me if I’m paid to promote Instagram. Ha! I wish. That would be great but I am not paid nor does Instagram even know I exist. Truthfully I just love it. I love photography in general but sometimes I’m too lazy or busy to drag out my huge DSLR camera so my camera phone is all I have to work with. Add fun filters to the pictures and a community waiting to comment on them and I think you have the perfect solution called Istagram.

So what is Instagram? Simply Instagram is a photo sharing community found within a very popular phone app.  Notice I said the word, “community”. It is not a site just to mess with pictures by adding different filters to the photo. There is a place under everyone’s photo to comment, like and engage about that picture. If you only use Instagram to make your pictures prettier and not engage in the community than you are missing a huge piece of the puzzle and what makes Instagram fun.

It is not the same as Pinterest and here’s why; Pinterest is an idea sharing community that links back to the original source of that picture. It is not just random pictures that you only look at. Someone that lives in this house and happens to be the only male but shall remain nameless came to me a few months ago bragging about how he is not on Pinterest. He pulled his laptop over to show me about 6 horrible embarrassing pictures of me that he had pinned to his pinterest boards. Voila! Instant embarrassment and he loved it. Gladly I told him that he needed to delete the pictures because Pinterest is not about showing off your photos, it’s about linking to ideas of others that you might want to revisit in the future.

Instagram is for showing your pictures no matter how embarrassing they are. It is also for talking about how embarrassing they are to others. Instagram is for showing where you’ve been, what you’ve done and what your kids have colored on while letting others walk you through their life as well. It’s fun, quirky, thought provoking and sometimes a great learning experience.

So why should you be on it? Simply it’s an amazing tool to show others a daily snapshot of your life, to learn how to look at things differently, or to challenge yourself to see what amazing images you can capture with a cell phone camera. And most importantly it’s a great way to meet new people, see places in the world that you have never seen, and realizing that you are not the only person in the world with a dog that shreds toilet paper to a million tiny pieces.

Now that you know what Instagram is, visit this Pinterest board that I made to learn a little bit more about how and why you should use it.

This post tonight is in honor of my sister, The Jerk, who is sadly failing to thrive in modern technological culture. If she doesn’t start using the Instagram account soon that I signed her up for I am dropping my kids off at her house with expresso filled hydration packs.

Bobbie is a homeschooling mom of three girls in the Houston area. Although most of her days are spent scrubbing up paint or ungluing her fingers, occasionally she also takes the time to burn dinner.

Thanks for this! I’ll admit I haven’t joined the Instagram movement yet but mainly b/c I didn’t see the advantage. But you did a great job explaining the benefits so I’ll be signing up soon. And looking for yet more followers….:-)
