Homemade Costumes for Girls Homemade Halloween

My pet peeve in life is buying Halloween Costumes. They’re way too expensive and just do not hold up well, in my opinion. So this year once again I made their costumes. My rule for their costumes is that it must be modest and positive. No gore or blood is allowed for our halloween costumes but that’s our own personal choice. This year we had a peacock, a pink fairy and the flower pot costume from last year returned.  We had three great handmade costumes that our kids loved and spent about $20 on our Handmade Halloween.

Peacock Tutu Easy Costume from Clumsy Crafter Homemade Halloween

First we had the Peacock Tutu that I first saw on The Train To Crazy. She has a great tutorial on how to make one. It was easy and cost about under $10 to make including the peacock feather hair clip. Plus we found the blue tshirt on clearance at Target for $3.50 so her entire costume costs us around $13.50.

Pink Fairy Costume Homemade Halloween

Princess Goofy wanted to be an all pink Fairy. She had pink leggings to wear but at the last minute switched to jeans underneath and I thought it looked adorable. Her tutu was free since I already had everything on hand, her Tshirt was $5 at Target, we bought one flower bouquet at the Dollar Store for $1 and the wings also came from the dollar store. Her costume was $7 and it fit her personality wonderfully. She looked so pretty and insisted on trying to fly.

Flower Pot Costume from The Dollar Store Homemade Halloween

At first Princess Newbie had told me she wanted to be a puppy dog. I bought her a white Tshirt that I was going to add spots too and make ears and a tail to match but then when she saw the peacock costume and the fairy costume she decided that she needed to be pretty. I am going to make her a tutu this week with left over tulle but since we had plans that required costumes this weekend I went ahead and put her back into the Flower Pot Costume that I made from the Dollar Store last year. The step by step tutorial for making it can be found here. Last year it cost me $6 to make and this year it was free!

The girls asked what Mr. Byrd was going to be for Halloween. I told them that he was already wearing his grumpy old man costume. He wasn’t amused. I was.

What are your kids going as for halloween? Do you make it or buy it?

  1. Is buying costumes your only pet peeve?

I don’t like buying Halloween costumes either. There is no imagination involved with buying costumes! I love to make my son’s costumes! He is only three… so I’ve only had to make 4 costumes. He has been a peanut (as a baby), a goldfish, Spongebob (which we don’t watch… but it was an awesome costume), and this year he was the Lorax.

  5. Damion, you crack me up.

I hate buying costumes too. Makes me cringe. That’s why my mom bought Cash’s. :D It wasn’t cheap. :/

  6. Oh, I also meant to say that I LOVE these photos. These are the best photos of the year that your girls have taken lol. Princess Goofy made me lol in hers. HAHAHAHA. She’s a nut.

  7. I have a unicorn this year, but next year, I am ALL OVER that flower pot!

  8. That flowerpot costume is significantly tighter than it was last year. That girl is growing like a weed. Hahaha
