A few days ago Mr. Byrd mentioned that I might need to drop him off at the bus stop extra early one morning. He usually drives to the bus stop but on this morning he needed to leave his car somewhere and I needed to drive him. It all sounded pretty normal and routine for us when a car needs to go to the shop or he has to do certain work tasks that require him to ride with someone else during the day.
Fast forward to Monday night when he told me that he needed to be at the bus stop at 6:15am and I needed to drive him.
My response: (blink, blink, blink)….. ha! that’s a good joke!
You see I’m not a morning person and never once in my life have I claimed to be. I’m more of a slide off the mattress hoping to hit the floor feet first and wander aimlessly around the house for
20 40 minute type person until the coffee kicks in.
But now I was going to have to leave our house by 6:00 with three kids in tow that I was responsible for getting out the door on this particular morning. So of course the smart thing to do was to go to bed earlier than normal, which I am proud to say that I was in bed by midnight. However I could not sleep. My legs were itchy, I was restless, my mind was wandering and I laid there wide awake for a very long time. Finally at 2:30 I couldn’t take it anymore and got up hoping that maybe a little snack would help me sleep.
I crawled back in bed before 3 and finally I was able to fall asleep.
I just wish the cat would have gotten the “I really need sleep because I have to get up early memo”. She didn’t get it.
At 4:30 she woke me up attacking tissue paper in the corner of our room. I shooed her off and crawled back to bed. Five minute later the same thing happened again. I feel like I had just crawled back into bed when my alarm went off and it was time to get going.
We actually all got out the door fully dressed and had Mr. Byrd dropped at the bus on time. It was a Christmas miracle in October. However I know for a fact that perky little jingles on the radio that proclaim over and over “Good morning!” just want to make you get a little violent.
We ran through the donut shop to fufill the bribe I had given to the 4 year old for getting up two hours earlier than normal and then drove through Starbucks drive thru for me. Finally we ended up at the grocery store at 6:45 where I promptly dropped my entire cup of very much needed coffee on my feet and learned that I should not grocery shop early in the morning before I had coffee. It also turns out that I really like very expensive cheese early in the morning.
Apparently the 4 year old couldn’t hang with the cool kids who got up early and fell asleep in the buggy at the grocery store.
I did happen to fit in a small cat nap on the couch later in the day, which the dog joined me for until the 4 year old insisted on being our blanket.
As I type this at 7pm the kids are all rubbing their eyes and fighting to stay awake. Personally I’m running on a little bit less than fumes.
Here’s to all the morning people of the world. You are very special people that I just don’t get.
