Peeps are one of those treats that you either love or you hate. There’s one way to really make them loveable to everyone: dip them in chocolate! There’s a lot of great things to make with Peeps but this is one of my favorites. It’s simple, yummy and involves chocolate. What part of that is bad?
I started with a king size Hershey’s bar. It worked great but I would only use this method if you’re going to eat them within 24 hours. After that the chocolate began to discolor and get splotchy. If you’re not planning on eating them soon than I would use regular semi-sweet baking chips.
No matter what kind of chocolate you use you need to melt it. You can either do this over a double boiler or in the microwave. If you’re going to use the microwave just place it in a manageable size bowl and microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until it’s all melted.
Step one is done. How much easier can it be?
While you’re melting your chocolate, gather your other supplies. You’ll need popsicle sticks or paper straws, Peeps, mini marshmallows cut in half, a cooling rack, wax or parchment paper and finally, your melted chocolate.
Slide the Peep onto the paper straw until it’s secure. (I did have something else written there to begin with about putting it where the sun doesn’t shine.) Then you simply dip one peep at a time into chocolate, using a spoon to cover any hard to reach areas.
Here’s the main trick to getting great looking peeps, tap the straw on the side of the bowl several times to get the excess chocolate off. Then rotate it 90 degrees and tap the other side. You want it to be covered but not dripping in chocolate.
Place the chocolate covered peeps onto a cooling rack with parchment or wax paper underneath to let the rest of the excess chocolate drip off. Watch your resident 4 year olds or they will be rubbing their fingers in the dripping chocolate, or so I’ve heard.
This is a great time to add the marshmallow tails. Just place half of a mini marshmallow onto the Peep’s bum and it should stay and set as the chocolate hardens.
Let them stay on the cooling rack for 20-30 minutes and then move them to a flat surface covered in parchment or wax paper to finish setting which should take at least an hour. If you leave them on the cooling rack than you might wind up with crazy drips permanently set onto the Peep’s backs.
Don’t they look yummy? They really are great. Plus it’s a fun way to dress up Peeps for Easter.
