It’s easy to be thankful for the easy things. Each year we write what we’re thankful for on colorful leaves or go around the table at dinner to let the simple thanks roll off our tongue and slip off the table. We’re thankful for our mom, the amazing dinner, maybe for our jobs or the new TV you’re buying the next day.
Those are all great things to be thankful for and we should be thankful.
But let’s go deeper.
This year let’s be thankful for the hard roads that formed us. Let us be thankful for the jagged rocks that cut our feet on the climb that maybe made us sit down and develop a different view for awhile.
Give thanks for the strength you developed when you had to drag around a burden larger than yourself or you can give thanks for the pit that somehow you were able to climb out of.
Life is hard and it’s messy. Some years are much harder than others. It never fails that when you think you have life figured out it comes like a wrecking ball and knocks you back down.
In the midst of the worst we need to give thanks for the trials because we are alive to experience it.
The true thanks though should be for our victories. Even if you are in the midst of a trial chances are that you’ve already come out of other ones. Give thanks for those victories and let them encourage you through this time.
Give thanks for the victories in your life with wild abandon.
This isn’t just a day to be thankful for the simple things. Every single day is a day to give thanks to those things. But this year as you go around the dinner table tell those sitting with you of the victories in your life and why you’re thankful for those.
There’s young kids that need to know that you have overcome.
There’s older people that have went before you and will relish the memories.
Then there’s the people that just need to hear how you’ve conquered the swamp that tried to entrap you because they’re in the same place.
So give thanks from the depth of your heart to the One that walked with you and danced with you in victory.
Give thanks for the worst and celebrate the best that came from that.
It’s time to go deeper.
