This too shall pass.
It might pass like a kidney stone.
But it will pass.
Wiser words have never been spoken and to those of us that know the pain of a kidney stone, you get it. But it’s hard to find gifts that make sense and bring a smile to someone who is in the midst of that pain. That’s why I created this free cut file for electronic cutting machines so that you can create the perfect gift for kidney stone sufferers.
We have some dear friends from church. They came from the same area of Louisiana as Mr. Byrd and have kids about the same age as ours. They do cheer for Alabama sport teams but we let that slide because their humor and outlook towards life are golden.
Shortly after we met them we also discovered that the husband of that couple also suffers with a long history of kidney stones. When my last big one hit in October it turns out that he was also suffering from some attacks and had surgery scheduled for the week before my first surgery within the same urology practice.
He really helped talk me through some of the nervousness and it was nice just to have someone that understood exactly what I was dealing with. So to thank and support him, Mr. Byrd took him a gift from us the night before his first surgery.
Nothing says “happy recovery from kidney stones!” like a gigantic mug that’s easily filled with water and carried around the house since you’re supposed to drink 4 liters of water a day following kidney stone surgery.

So I picked up a Bubba Envy Mug (you can grab one on Amazon.com here) because they’re a nice blank slate on one side, vinyl sticks really well to them and they are 32 ounces, which is just a little over one ounce short of a liter.
I had previously made my mother in-law a retirement gift using the same mug so I knew that the vinyl would stick to it and not come off!
However before I made this cut file I had searched the web high and low for gifts for kidney stones and nothing came up, even on Pinterest! You know it’s serious when Pinterest doesn’t have anything.
So I took a saying that made me laugh and turned it into a cut file. Then I cleaned the outside of the Bubba Envy mug really well, cut out the vinyl saying, and applied it to the mug using clear contact paper from the Dollar Tree as transfer tape. (I promise clear contact paper from the Dollar Tree is the best transfer tape you’ll find.)
It’s that easy.
But because I love you, here’s some suggestions to make it easier:
- Clean the cup with rubbing alcohol before applying vinyl.
- Use a permanent outdoor vinyl – I love Oracle 651 vinyl and it’s all I use for gifts since I want to know the vinyl will stick forever.
- To apply the vinyl evenly with the top of the mug, fill the mug with water to where you want the top of the vinyl to be placed. Use the water inside the mug as a guide.
- Recommend to the person receiving the gift that they hand wash the mug.
I liked this mug so much that I made one for myself. Then I made one for my urologist.
I used a printed vinyl to make mine on the purple Bubba Envy mug but it’s hard to read with the printed vinyl so I’m going to redo it.
If you don’t have a machine to cut vinyl with, you can also right click and save the image above. Enlarge it to fit a piece of paper and print it off. Pop it in a frame or use it on a homemade greeting card and it’ll still bring a smile to anyone’s face.
If you want an electronic cutting machine, I recommend a Cricut because it’s what I’m used to and is easy to use.
You are free to use this for personal reasons. Please do not sell it or use it to make products for the purpose of selling them.
