Eclectic Burlap Jewelry Holder Feature

Eclectic Burlap Jewelry holder using a picture frame and plastic animals

I have horrible jewelry organization and storage issues, I know this shocks you. So when Ikea Houston's blog, Life at Home, asked me to make a craft for them I knew that something that would help with jewelry organization and act as a cute earring holder would be a good fit for me and then. Plus it has burlap and funky colorful animals. Who can resist that? If you want instructions on how to make your own, go visit the Life At Home Blog and it will give you step by step instructions. … [Read more...]

How to Get Rid of Countertop Stains

howtogetstainsoffcountertopskoolaidsharpie

This is an old post that I originally published in 2011 but I'm reposting today since it's too good of a trick not to know.    Clumsiness runs in my veins. More times than not I knead food coloring into fondant or playdough straight on the countertop without thinking that it might stain it. Over the years I have become a pro at getting it off quickly and easily. My husband had no idea this huge pink stain was on the counters yesterday until he saw the pictures tonight. I'm that good. You can be too. Really this technique works anytime you need to draw color out of a laminate … [Read more...]

How To Make Chalk Paint

howtomakechalkpainttutorial

Have you heard of Chalk Paint? It's quickly becoming the newest rage in the DIY circle, especially after a blogging conference this summer when a ton of bloggers were given little jars of very expensive Annie Sloan chalk paint. So many blogs I've read lately have been talking about it and it looks like a great product but the price? wow!  Unless it comes with someone to paint the furniture for me, I'm just to cheap to pay that much. Chalk paint is not chalkboard paint. It is a matte finished paint that is usually thinner and great for distressing/antiquing of pieces. A year ago when we … [Read more...]

The Day Crayons Met the Heat

artprojectmeltedcrayon

Lately I've been seeing a ton of the same fabulous melted crayon projects online.  One of my favorite bloggers, Meg Duerksen, recently posted her version of it which you can see here.  (I adore her blog and it truly inspires me to love color and to use my camera more!) I love the projects that I've been seeing but of course I had to put my own spin on it, literally.  Living in Houston, which is about to have the hottest summer on record, helped a lot with this project. It's definately something fun to do in the extreme heat besides cry and sit by the fan.  Just kidding! I haven't … [Read more...]

Coconut Oil Playdough Recipe

coconutoilplaydoughrecipe

I love homemade playdough for two reasons. Number one is that I know exactly what is in it and number two being the fact that it's so cheap and easy to make that I don't mind throwing it away after they are done paying. It never fails that with the store bought playdoh we end up with four containers, three of which contain a gray brown mixed color of playdoh and one of which is totally empty and is probably being used as a weapon against sisters. It takes five minutes at most to whip up a batch of homemade playdough.  The worst part for me though is the smell. Because you use heated oil it … [Read more...]
