Boiled Peanuts Recipe – It’s a (YUMMY) Southern Thing

If you know anything about southern foods than you have most likely love boiled peanuts. I remember eating them as a child but hadn’t had them in years when I decided to try my hand at making them. I don’t think you can find a simpler southern recipe out there than boiled peanuts.

This is a very easy recipe and one that you should definitely try soon. 

My grandparents used to go to Georgia yearly to visit their family there and every time they would stop back by our house with a car full of goodies, including an old tupperware container full of boiled peanuts.  It’s a great memory and to this day I still get a watery mouth thinking about them served hot or cold. There’s nothing like cold boiled peanuts that squirt out cold salt water when you go to open their shells on a really hot day. To make these you simply need raw peanuts. They can be hard to find but I had luck finding them at Kroger. The package must say raw or green peanuts (they are not really green). They will be in the shells.  First put the peanuts in the large pot. I used a lb. of peanuts because that is what I could find. Fill the pot with water, it needs to be able to cover all the peanuts easily. Add about 3/4 cups of salt per lb of peanuts, more or less depending on how salty you want it.  Now let the water come to a boil and then decrease the heat to a high simmer and leave it. Check periodically to make sure there’s enough water to cover all the peanuts. Add water as needed. If you add a lot of water you might also have to add more salt.  That’s it. leave it for 3-4 hours until the peanuts on the inside are soft. Once they start getting soft taste them. If they need more salt, add more and cook a little bit more.  Eat as many as you can while hot and refrigerate the rest. And yes, you can freeze boiled peanuts if you make a ton.  They’re easy and yummy. Have you had them? What do you think about boiled peanuts?
