Burlap is one of my favorite things to craft with because it is very affordable. Not only is it great on the wallet but the texture it adds always seems to bring the project to another dimension. That’s why I thought it would be fun to make Burlap Christmas Ornaments this year.
This is an easy project to make that you can do with kids or for a fun girls night out project.
To get started all you will need is a small amount of burlap, red and white paint, glue gun and glue sticks, batting or another form of filling and paint brushes. A small amount of floral wire is optional or you can use a traditional ornament hanger if you wish.
Once you’ve gathered your supplies it’s time to get this party started! I recommend setting the moody with Christmas music and some easy homemade Christmas desserts.
Start by tracing the shape of a fat candy cane on burlap using a marker. You want it to be slightly wider than you want your finished project to me. Now double up the fabric and cut out two of the exact same shape. Remember – you need 2 of this shape to make one ornament.
Now start at the smalles end of the candy cane and place a small line of hot glue all the way around the tip of the shape, as shown on the green lines above. You’re sealing all the edges so that the stuffing inside the ornament will stay in it’s place. Press the burlap pieces together until the glue hardens. Stick to a few inches at a time so that you can stuff the ornament easily.
Now take a small piece of batting and stuff inside the part of the candy cane that you have glued the edges shut. Glue a few more inches of each side of the ornament shut and add a little more stuffing. Continue doing this until all the edges are closed and the ornament is fully stuffed.
Any edges that come open can be glued back together again.
When it’s fully stuffed and closed up the edges of the burlap will be slightly frayed. Use scissors to trim the edges until they look neat and trim again.
Now your ornament is ready to be painted.
First you are going to paint red lines on your candy cane and let set for a few minutes to dry to the touch. Painting on burlap requires a lot of paint.
Now go back and add the white lines to your candy cane.
Let the ornaments dry fully. If you wish you can add a loop of thin wire at the top to hang it from the tree.
Now it’s ready!
This is a cute craft that will go well on a whimsical or rustic tree. They’re extremely affordable and fun for everyone to make, even kids!
