There’s a simple answer to any question that begins with “what do I do with?”. The answer is – dip it in chocolate.
Ok so maybe that won’t work for everything but wouldn’t it be glorious if it did?
“Mom, what do I do with the cat that won’t stop meowing?”. Dip it in chocolate.
“Honey what do I do with this sink full of dirty dishes?” Dip it in chocolate.
Ok so that won’t work. But there is one simple thing that always does work – Chocolate dipped strawberries and pretzels. But how do you make chocolate dipped strawberries or chocolate dipped pretzels?
It’s easy, so much easier than you could ever of imagined. So today let’s talk about a few tips and tricks to get great chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels.
Supplies for Chocolate Covered Strawberries or Chocolate Dipped Pretzels:
The ingredients for chocolate covered strawberries or pretzels are the same. You need chocolate to dip them in and anything fancy that you want to decorate them with.
You can use regular chocolate chips or even bars of chocolate to coat them in.
But over the years I have found that real chocolate can be picky. It’s easy to burn or over heat, it clumps easily and sometimes it just doesn’t want to melt. You can use real chocolate and follow the rest of these directions and it will work just the same!
BUT! I recommend Chocolate Candy Coating or Almond Bark. Why? Because you’ll get more for your buck and it’s pretty hard to mess up. It tastes the same as chocolate and no one will guess it’s not 100% real chocolate.
The only way you can mess it up is by adding moisture. Make sure all of your bowls and utensils are dry before starting! Don’t add liquid food coloring to color the white chocolate. Any moisture will make it freeze up and you’ll have to start again.
Toppings for your strawberries or pretzels can range from chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, candy coated sunflower seeds, sprinkles or just drizzled chocolate. There’s so many more great toppings! Go wild with it!
How to melt the chocolate or Chocolate Candy Coating:
To melt the chocolate or chocolate candy coating, break any bars into smaller pieces. Place it in a microwave proof bowl and heat it at 50% power for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between heat cycles. You can also place it in a heat proof bowl on top of a pot of boiling water on the stove top if you don’t use microwaves. Stir and heat until totally smooth. How to dip strawberries or pretzels:
Dipping strawberries and pretzels are easy! Start by laying out a piece of wax paper or parchment paper on the table or counter. All you’re going to do is pull back the green leaves from the top of the strawberry and gently dip it into the chocolate, making sure that the chocolate is even across the top of the strawberry. Pull it out of the chocolate and tap your wrist, not the strawberry, on the edge of the bowl lightly to knock off excess chocolate. Gently scrape the bottom of the strawberry against the edge of the bowl to remove anymore extra chocolate and then gently place it on the wax paper. Place any toppings on the chocolate before it hardens!
Chocolate dipped pretzels are the same process except that it’s easier to use a spatula to bring the chocolate up to the pretzel and turn the pretzel over the top of the chocolate. If you’re doing a lot of pretzels than it would probably be easiest to place the chocolate in a tall skinny cup so that it’s easier to handle the length of the pretzel.
Tap the pretzel on the edge of the bowl and then gently scrape the bottom across the edge and place it on wax paper.
You do have to add the sprinkles or other toppings quickly before the chocolate hardens.
If you want to add a drizzle of chocolate you can do that two different ways.
1. Fill a ziplock back with a little melted chocolate and snip off one of the corners. Use it as a piping bag to drizzle the chocolate over the top. This gives you a thicker line with more control.
2. Dip the spatula or fork into the chocolate and quickly shake it back and forth over the strawberries or pretzels. This is going to give you finer lines but you’ll have less control.
Then you simply let it all set until the chocolate is hard and then you enjoy it!
You’ll have amazing looking chocolate dipped pretzels –
