Those are faux cute! OK, so I had to get the pun out of the way and now we can get back to business. Leather earrings have become the rage and it’s for good reasons. First of all, they’re easy to make and second, DIY leather earrings or faux leather for the cheaper crowd, look expensive.
People like to make leather earrings using old purses or leather from the hobby store but today I’m going to show you one that’s even easier – Faux Leather Earrings using Faux Leather Ribbon from Hobby Lobby. Yes, I said ribbon.
It’s a wide ribbon on a spool (found in the

If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you,
That’s why these are amazing teacher gifts or co-worker presents. You cut several pairs on your Cricut, assemble them and then you have a lot of gifts for around $10 max (including the price of the jewelry findings).
Here’s what you need to know about using Faux Leather Ribbon from Hobby Lobby:
- It has a felt back. Yes, it’s faux… that’s what you get for the price.
- You can cut it on a regular Cricut, you do not have to have a Maker.
But… here’s a few tips that you might want to know to help the process go smoother.
First… Do not put your faux leather ribbon straight down on a sticky mat. The fibers from the felt will stick you your mat. This is actually a great tip for all leathers – faux or real.
Before you put your leather down on your sticky mat, press clear contact paper, sticky side up onto your mat, and then stick the faux leather to the contact paper, felt or fibrous side down. After you cut, you just peel off the contact paper and anything that stuck to it just gets thrown in the trash with the contact paper. This will help keep your mat nice and clean.
Next… You will need scissors to trim the edges a little if you’re using the faux leather with the felt back. Just trim the felt edge a little to make sure you can’t really see it.
Finally, If you’re going to use the faux leather with the felt back, punching a hole at the top to hang the earring will be hard. Use ribbon crimps (from the jewelry section) to grab the faux leather and then hang the earrings from the top of the crimper.
I know what you’re thinking. Is that really how easy it is? Yes. Yes, it is.
Then when you’re done, you get something that looks like this…
And yes, you can make these in five minutes before you run out the door to take your sweet husband to a birthday dinner. Ask me how I know.
Free Leather Earring Cut File:
Usually when I give you cut files, I’ll break them down a little bit more but this one has several different shapes and sizes so I’m going to upload it as one .PNG.
If you’re using a Cricut, use the contour tool to pick out the shapes you want to use and then adjust the size. If you’re using a machine that needs an SVG file, this SVG converter works well for me.

I used the deepest setting on my machine. Sometimes it did not cut all the way through and I had to carefully trim with scissors. If you’re having problems you might also want to change your blade if you’re using the original blade and haven’t ever changed it.

Do the thickest setting that your machine will do and also a newer blade. There is a deep blade that a lot of people have luck with but I haven’t tried it. As long as it cuts through the top layer, you can cut the felt layer apart with scissors and it won’t show.
