Have you ever been to a Do-It-Herself Workshop at The Home Depot? Honestly I didn’t know they existed until this past week when I was invited to one here in Houston. Now I’m saving money for the Ryobi circular saw I tried out and planning a future girls night out to create something fabulous at a future Do-It-Herself Workshop.
There was a special element to this workshop which stood out and shined bright but more about that in a second. (Here’s a little hint for my more impatient friends: you know her voice and your heart might as well.)
First, let me tell you what I loved about the workshop and why I can’t wait for the next one.
It’s all about girl power – The Do-It-Herself Workshop is about bringing the power to women. How many of you have ever been holding down the fort by yourself while your husband or boyfriend were out of town and your toilet has broken? It seems like every single time my husband is away the toilet breaks or our double sink clogs. Every. Single. Time. These workshops can help you prepare for those times and help know what to do. Knowledge is power. Power tools are also power. It’s the best of both worlds.
Remove some of the fear – There’s several things that I’ve wanted to do for quite a long time such as build a new bed for our youngest or create a board and batten wall in our dining room but one thing stands in my way: anxiety over using power tools. I can handle a screw gun and my jigsaw that Mr. Byrd gave me for Valentine’s Day is my BFF but I need to feel more comfortable using a circular saw, table saw and nail gun to do what I want to do.
The Do-It-Herself Workshops help you learn how to use those power tools and become more comfortable with them. For a clumsy person such as myself, it guarantees less accidents and more successful projects (which Mr. Byrd is all for).
Raising strong girls – One of the goals of my life is to show my daughters that they can do anything. They’ve seen me dig out muck from around one of our sprinkler heads to fix a leak, fix our van’s sliding door, sand down and re-stain furniture and much more. Everything they see me do now empowers them more for the future when they live in their own homes (and our internet data bill drops significantly).
Since the Do-It-Herself Workshop that I attended was a special event with some extra surprises thrown in, I got to talk with some awesome people from Ryobi that helped me find tools that are the right size and power for my upcoming projects, spend time listening to advice on a better lawn from Scotts Lawncare (my home owners association will be relieved), and learned more about the drool worthy Vision Grills.
But that’s not all!
This workshop was hosted by radio show host Delilah! I remember first hearing her show on the radio in high school where people would pour their hearts out to Delilah. Nothing has changed since then and she’s still known for the simple line, “You’re listening to….. Delilah”.
She led the workshop, showing everyone in attendance how to put their project together. But then after they were done, she stood there and signed everyone’s grill caddy and talked to them for a minute.
She gets people and that sometimes people just need an ear to listen.
During the workshop she told the story about how she partnered with The Home Depot because she shopped there daily. Her business associate would call and say, “where are you?” and her reply almost daily was “Home Depot”.
After the workshop I spent a few minutes picking her brain about the type of projects that she likes to do when it comes to crafting and DIY.
I knew I liked her already because of the time she spent with the little girls in attendance but when I heard that her favorite project to date was tiling her own bathroom with tiles that she painted herself, I developed a creative crafter crush. (It’s a real thing, look it up.)
Then when I learned that her favorite section of Home Depot was the gardening section and that she gets a little sad during the holidays because they remove the plants to make room for christmas decorations, I realized that we were probably long lost sisters.
And then we talked about things a little deeper, such as adoption and foster care and my crafter crush turned into pure respect and awe. As a parent of 9 adopted kids and founder of a charity that is a voice for forgotten children, she truly gets what it means to care for those who can’t always care for themselves.
Sometimes we think that we can’t take another child in our home at that time, and honestly there’s times where we just can’t. But Delilah, the queen of sage advice, even had a suggestion for those who want to help kids but can’t foster or adopt at that time: be a mentor to them. Spend time with the kids who need a family and pour into their lives. Those kids need it but honestly, you probably do as well.
And have you ever wondered what the perfect song to craft to would be? According to Delilah she recommends True Colors by Cyndi Lauper because you use all the colors of the rainbow when you’re crafting.
Get together a group of friends, or your kids, and check out the free workshops at The Home Depot. They host a DIH Workshop every third Thursday of the month at your local Home Depot. You might learn how to make something, overcome your fear of power tools, or even meet someone that inspires you to do more and go further.
I made this cute grill caddy from the Do-It-Herself Workshop.
Stay tuned because soon I’m going to show you how I finished it off and where I’m using it at in my own home.

*This is a sponsored post with The Network Niche Influencer Agency however I will be going back to a Do-It-Herself Workshop at The Home Depot and I hope to see you there! All opinions are my own. Just ask Mr. Byrd, I’m not easily swayed and my opinions are strong.
