This is an older post but let’s be honest, I just love it. I still have this little wooden heart sign and each year it’s one of my favorite Valentine Decorations to pull out of storage and put on the shelf. It makes me happy. That’s why I hope that you’ll like this super simple Valentine’s Day Craft as much as I do.
There’s a wall in my kitchen where I have my paint chip art that I’ve been meaning to add a few other things to as well. My plan was to have a small gallery wall by the kitchen table full of things that make us happy.
Then I got the call that a local news station wanted to come film for valentines’ day and I realized that there was a lot of blank spots on that gallery wall. So what better thing to do at 10pm the night before they were to show up than make a new canvas hanging for that empty space on the wall?
I made a simple Valentine’s Day wall hanging using a canvas, old book, paint, Mod Podge and glitter. It’s the perfectly easy Valentine’s Day craft that you still have time to make! You can even make it and give it as a valentine!
That night I quickly Instagrammed a dark picture of it because I was just so thrilled with how it turned out. The picture went wild on Instagram! So I decided to do another one and make a tutorial to share with all of you.
For the first one I used one of the simple white canvases that you can buy in the bulk packages. For the second one, I used a scrap of wood since I didn’t have another canvas. The good news is that it works perfectly on both the wood and canvas!
This is a really easy project that anyone can do. It’s a great project to do together with a group of friends or even with older children.
To start you’ll need a scrap piece of smooth wood or a canvas of any size. You’ll also need pages torn out from an old book (if you can find a copy of Pride and Prejudice that would be ideal!), paint brushes, Mod Podge, red paint and glitter.
Tear the edges off of the book pages and then tear them into slightly smaller pieces. You may also want to scan the pages to make sure that the text is appropriate for any small eyes that might see them.
Working in sections, spread a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the wood or canvas. If the Mod Podge is too thick then you will get bubbles and bumps on your project.
Press one piece of a page down onto the Mod Podge, making sure that it’s smooth. You also need to press it down over the edges to create a sharp edge.
Spread another very thin layer of Mod Podge over the edges to seal them and allow overlapped edges to stick.
The key to using Mod Podge is to do a lot of thin layers.
Keep going, fitting the pages together like a puzzle, overlapping the edges slightly and spreading a thin layer of Mod Podge over the top.
Once you have the top done, go back and do sides being careful not to touch the top.
Do not let the project dry yet!
While the Mod Podge is still wet you’re going to paint a heart on the top with red paint. The Mod Podge will give the paint a translucent look, allowing you to still see the words on the pages.
If your Mod Podge has dried, simply mix some paint with Mod Podge to paint the heart onto your project.
Let it all dry. Walk away for an hour. Start some laundry, read a book or take a quick cat nap.
If you’re in a rush you can fan your project in the air to help it dry faster.
Once it is dry to the touch, it’s time to add some magic.
Using a paintbrush, outline the painted heart with Mod Podge. You just want an outline, not filled completely in.
Now sprinkle red glitter over the Mod Podge outline and then in the words of Taylor Swift, shake it off.
When you’re done you’ll have a project that should look similar to this:

It’s cute and fun to make. If you want to give it as a valentine, just turn it over and write a sweet message on the back.
