The dollar store is my happy place. It’s one of my favorite places to get craft supplies for seasonal projects such as fall crafts. Why? Because you can buy a ton of supplies that will only be used for a season without breaking the bank.
In fact, on today’s project I only spent $4 at The Dollar Tree and used a few other supplies that I already had on hand. You should easily be able to make this fall chalkboard decor for less than $10!
Let’s get this party started before christmas crafts arrive!
To make this you’ll need a large plastic platter and an assortment of fake flowers from your local dollar store. I also used fine grit sandpaper, hot glue and chalkboard paint that I already had on hand.
Start by cleaning your platter well with soapy water to remove any residue. Next sand it lightly with fine grit sandpaper. It really just needs a quick once over with the sandpaper to rough up the shiny slick surface.
This step will help the paint adhere to the plastic better. If you skip this step, your chalkboard paint might peel off of the platter.
Paint three thin coats of chalkboard paint, letting it dry completely in between coats.
A word about chalkboard paint:
Chalkboard paint is not the same as chalk paint! Make sure you are buying chalkboard paint. I purchased this Valspar Chalkboard paint to paint a chalkboard wall, which has held up well! I really like it and it has lasted a long time!
However you can use chalkboard spray paint to get a smoother surface or even a smaller bottle of it from the hobby store to save money.
I use chalkboard paint a lot – even on regular projects in place of black paint. It’s something I keep on hand and I recommend you do the same as well.
When your chalkboard platter is dry, it’s time to add the flowers!
The flowers from dollar stores will hold up throughout the entire season but the stems are made from very cheap plastic that will melt easier than other fake flowers.
If you use a high heat glue gun than your stems might melt a little. I always just cover this area up and roll with it. You can also use a low heat hot gun to save your fingertips. Not sure which glue gun to use? This glue gun guide might help you!
After I glued all of my flowers on, my chalkboard looked like this. But it wasn’t done yet!
You can glued a loop of twine on the back to hang the chalkboard with.
Most importantly you need to season the chalkboard. This simply means that you need to rub chalk all over the board and then wipe it off. This will help make the chalkboard easily erasable and make it easier to write.
After all those steps are done, write your fall greetings on your new chalkboard fall decor and hang it where your guests can see it! It would be a great front door decoration this fall! If you don’t love this idea for your front door, try out the fall ruffle wreath.
Pin this project to your fall crafts board and then make it as soon as you can!
