How to Make the Best Popsicles!
The earth is warming up! It’s that time of year when we rejoice over the fact that winter is over but in truth in 2 – 3 weeks we’ll be griping over how hot it is! That’s when you’ll already need to know how to make the best popsicles!
Living in south Texas, one thing is true – it gets hotter than hades. Not only does it get extremely hot and muggy but there seems to be a few weeks when it’s just really hard for your body to adjust to the mild heat at the start of summer. It’s crazy!
One thing that always helps with heat are popsicles. For years we bought the messy brightly colored popsicles from the store. Anytime a child ate one you’d have to strip them down and get out the power washer or be prepared to spend an hour by the washing machine trying to get the stain out of the brand new dress. Those popsicles were a mess! Eventually we learned that one of our children has issues with red food dye (it’s a real thing -look it up) and we had to stop buying them all together because of the high amount of food dye in the popsicle.
Of course it was bound to happen that eventually they started begging for popsicles again. But the store bought ones still affected our child and they still left a sugary trail of goo behind them. The answer was no. Then we discovered how fun it is to make your own popsicles.
So what’s the best popsicles? I can’t give you a flat out answer.
The truth is that the best popsicles are the ones that you can either make with your children or you surprise your friends with a crazy concoction that just works!
Without a doubt – the best popsicles are the ones you make at home.
How do you make popsicles at home and always have them ready? Yes making popsicles at home take more time than just throwing a box in the cart at the supermarket. But if you start ahead of time, you can have a great supply full of funky fun flavors before the heat arrives.
The #1 tip to making your own popsicles at home is to buy a serious popsicle mold. The little plastic molds in different shapes are fun but you’re going to loose the tops and only get about 4 – 6 popsicles per mold. Plus you can’t stockpile the popsicles if you need the plastic handles for the next batch. This is the popsicle mold that I have. You can find it on Amazon here. It makes 10 popsicles at a time and every mold holds about 2.5 ounces of liquid. It’s easy to make popsicles this way. I know how much liquid I need to fill all the slots and the wooden popsicle sticks are very affordable. Once the popsicles are frozen, remove them from the mold and wrap them in plastic wrap or parchment paper and place them in a bag in the freezer until they’re ready to be eaten. It’s easy! And making your own popsicles can be really fun!
Anything you can put into the blender can be turned into a popsicle.
Last year we went all out when it came to fun flavors for popsicles. The kids help me make some really crazy ones but our favorite were the Apple Pie Popsicles. One of our older favorites, before we bought this popsicle mold, were ones that we added sparkling water to before we froze it. The sparkling water make the popsicles flake as you eat them. It’s fun!
