Sanity Isn’t Cheap

After 7 years of marriage we still know how to keep things hot and smokin’. Tonight we went on a date. Like the wild couple we are we didn’t do any of the boring things like go bowling or to the movies. We’re too hip for that.  Instead of doing those lame-o things we went and bought a washer and a dryer. So fresh and so clean, clean. Let’s rewind to how we got here shall we; Our washer and dryer have been slowly going out for years. Years. But someone in this family is cheap, really cheap.  The other person begged to go buy a new set. “Pretty please with clean undies on top?,”  they’d beg. But he she wouldn’t relent because she’s frugal cheap. The dryer would stop heating and it’d just be *kick* *bang* *slap* until it worked again. When the washer stopped spinning there was just a small come to Jesus meeting until it decided to spin. Nothing a DIY’er handiwoman couldn’t handle.  Until this morning…. Our freezer apparently didn’t get the memo that I’m not to be messed with and decided to quit working…. a few days ago unbeknown to us.  This morning as I was digging through our laundry pile looking for a missing bathing suit I noticed a weird smell and then some damp clothes. A little deeper into the pile and there were sopping wet clothes that smelled bad, really bad. A quick glance toward the extra freezer told the story. There was defrosted juice and blood seeping out from the bottom of the freezer, soaking half of our laundry pile in foul smelling liquids. I held it together (or not) and cleaned out the freezer, mopped the garage floor with amonia, and pushed the freezer out to the curb along with the three garbage bags full of defrosted and smelly meat.  Then I turned to the pile of wet clothes but I couldn’t wash them yet because the dryer wasn’t drying the current load. Three starts of the dryer later and the load was dry enough to switch the clothes around and then start the first of three yucky gross smelly loads of clothes.  Except that the one load took several washing to get the smell out, especially when I noticed that the washing machine wasn’t spinning again…. Then there was the drying that took a little lot longer than necessary only to start the second load of nasty clothes while the heat of the day was making the garage smell like a hunter’s paradise. Twelve hours later and I was finally putting the third load into the washing machine, where it still sits now. So tonight we went on our hot date and bought a washer and dryer.  I guess you can put a price on sanity because I think the new washer and dryer will be worth every penny.
