The Weekend Whirlwind
Sometimes we live by the hair of our chinny chin chins. This weekend was one of those times.
I knew Mr. Byrd was going hunting so I decided at the last minute to head up to the DFW area to see my grandfather, who is back in the hospital. Last minute meaning that Wednesday night I decided to leave Thursday around lunch time.
So on the ride home from church Wednesday when the girls were going on and on about their Valentine’s party with our friends the next day, I had to break it to them that we were going to DFW instead.
Of course Mr. Byrd being the helpful on that he is said, “Why don’t you leave after the party?”.
If it wasn’t dark he might have seen the look I was giving him.
I wanted the girls to go to the Valentine’s day party but I also knew it wouldn’t end until 2pm and that we would have to get up extra early to pack and load up before the party. But that’s what we did.
While we were at the party I was telling my friends about my dad’s recent move to the east of Dallas and how much I’ve missed him lately. Because of his move we hadn’t seen each other in months and it’s been one of those months where I just needed to see him. So after a few text messages to my sister, who lives on the same street now as my dad, we had a plan.
We pulled out of Houston at 2pm and headed north three hours to my dad’s new house, without him knowing. At 5:15 we knocked on the front door and he opened it expecting to see my brother-in-law but was met with three giggly girls instead.
It was great to see him. Then when you add on top of that the fact that I got to see my sister, brother-in-law and their girls and it was glorious.
We had a quick dinner with them and then loaded back up in the van and drove two more hours to my in-law’s house. After the excitement of the day and the mass amounts of chocolate, the girls arrived hyper and ready to party until almost 11pm.
The next morning we woke up and they headed out to a fun day with their Mimi that included shopping and a trampoline park and I headed over to see my grandfather in the hospital without the kids. I know seeing them would be great medicine for him but I’m not sure how the kids would handle it so I went alone.
It was a sweet time with him but hard at the same time. I left there pretty sad and ready to head back to Houston. So I made the decision that we would go home the next day.
Saturday we woke up, packed the van back up and went to visit my grandmother since I knew that seeing the girls was the pick up that she needed. After an hour of giggling and the girls destroying her puzzle, we loaded back up in the van and made another detour.
It turns out that I had forgotten to give my dad his laptop charger that I’ve had at my house for months and had brought with us in case I had time to visit him on our trip. So instead of going home, I drove east once again and met him half way for dinner and to give him his charger.
Finally we headed home and got there at almost 10pm on Saturday, where Mr. Byrd was already back from hunting and waiting on us with boxes of chocolates.
Once again the girls were wired from chocolate and being in the car and it was after 11pm when they finally went to bed.
After spending a few minutes with my handsome valentine, we followed them off to bed planning to wake up for church the next morning but way too exhausted for that to actually happen.
It turned out to be a blessing that we overslept because around 10am I knew something was wrong with me. By 11am I knew for a fact that I was struggling with a kidney stone.
I am so happy I wasn’t at church when the kidney stone hit me. But since Mr. Byrd was just laid off two weeks ago, we haven’t found another form of health insurance so I just took pain killers and went to bed to deal with the pain. Thankfully that was enough and I was able to sleep all day and woke up to the worst of it being over.
This weekend was crazy.
I went halfway across Texas and back. Mr. Byrd went to the other half of Texas and back. I saw family that I don’t get to see enough. We laughed and spent time going down memory lane. The girls went to their first trampoline park and got to spend time with their cousins that they adore.
I saw my grandfather, my hero and then I came home to chocolate and kidney stones – one of those is sweeter than the other.
It was a lively whirlwind of a weekend. Today is going to be another rest day and then Tuesday we’ll start the craziness over again.
How was your weekend?
