VBS 2018 | Game On! Craft Ideas

Vacation Bible School will be here before we know it. Last year our church did a space theme which was fun and easy to come up with plenty of craft ideas. However this year when I heard that the VBS theme was sports, it kinda threw me for a loop!  We have three girls. One who is sporty but we’re not like a family with a boy that might have sports balls all over the place and have spent years of their lives getting balls thrown at their heads. How do you do crafts for a sports themed party or VBS??? To make matters more hair pulling, our children’s ministry asked me to come up with some craft ideas to show people at our VBS kick off rally. Um.. sure. I think? So if you’re in the same predicament, never fear – help is here!

Here’s a few sports crafts ideas for this year’s Game On Vacation Bible School:

Sports Craft Idea: Sports Pendant –

The first thing I think of when I think of sports is a pendant. These are easy to make which make them great for all age levels.  To make them, use a yard stick to make the pattern on one piece of poster board. These are 10″ tall and on the opposite side of the poster board mark 5″ inches down and use a yard stick to make a triangle by connecting the points. Now use that pattern to mark the rest of the way down the poster board. I got 4 pendants out of one piece of poster board. They are very quick and easy to cut and make. Once you have your pendant, let the kids use sports themed stamps to create a cute design. I used die cuts glued down on top of the stamps. If you don’t want to buy stamps you can also use potato stamps cut into the shapes of footballs or tennis balls. 

Sport Craft Idea: Megaphones on a String

Everyone loves something on a string. Younger kids will love these megaphones on a string and they are simple crafts that will perfect on the day that you know you’re going to be short on craft time. All you need to make them is punch two holes in the top of a white paper cup. Let them kids decorate them with markers or stickers. Glue fringe tape or crepe paper on the bottom edge of the cup. If you use crepe paper, let the kids use scissors to cut it into fringe before they add it to their cup.  Once the cup is decorated, add a piece of yarn to help them hang it around their neck and it’s an easy megaphone! 

Sports Craft Idea: Paper Plate Spirit Rally

This is actually one of the crafts listed in the Game On VBS Craft Guide for preschoolers. There’s also a printable that you can add once it’s finished that looks like football laces with the verse included. It’s really cute. I wasn’t going to add this craft but I wound up really liking it and it’s a great craft for younger kids. Cut a handle out of a sturdy paper plate. Give the kids brown paper squares and have them glue it onto the plate. Add green and white streamers to the bottom of the plate so they can dance around and have fun!  It’s cute and fun.

Other Craft Ideas for Game On VBS:

• Fill an empty water bottle with rice. Help kids squirt tempra paint into the bottle of rice. Glue the cap on and then let them shake it until the rice becomes fully coated in paint. Decorate the outside of the bottle with stickers and let them use it as a spirit stick.
• I love this adorable foam finger from One Charming Party. It would be a great craft for the older kids to do themselves from start to finish.
