Washi Tape Chair Makeover

 When we bought our first house ten years ago we proudly bought our first dining table set at Ikea. It was farmhouse style and the perfect color that we easily both agreed on. Fast forward ten years and slowly the chairs have fallen apart. However I wasn’t ready to give up on the last remaining chair. I knew it deserved better. I knew it deserved to be part of a Washi Tape Project.  

Part of the details that used to be on the back of the chair had fallen off, it was stained and had paint drips on the seat but this is the chair from our first house! We couldn’t part with it yet.  For a year it sat in my craft room, a blanket hiding the broken jagged pieces on the back.

Finally I knew I had to do something. I removed the broken pieces that were just unnecessary details on the chair back and filled in the old holes left from those pieces with wood putty.  Patiently I waited until it dried and sanded the putty until it was even and could only see it if you truly looked. 

I knew I was going to leave the seat the original color and wanted it to peek through the sides of the tape so I couldn’t sand the chair. So I just wiped the entire chair down really well with liquid deglazer and let it dry. 

Then I taped off the seat part, covering it with newspaper to protect it from paint drips and I painted the rest of the chair. 

I have no idea what color I painted it. If you haven’t heard, I have a paint color choosing issue, so I mixed the 5 test pots of light teal paint that I had until I liked the color and went with it. It’s the same test pots that I also used for the painted vases. 

Finally came the fun part. I laid out the design I wanted, measuring to find the middle of the chair and went to town with decorative Expressions Tape by Scotch 3M. Not all of it is washi. Some of it is their decorative masking tape as well, I love that stuff. 

The corners and edges I simply cut with an exacto knife to get the perfect fit. I recommend also using a ruler or straight edge if you’re going for a similar style. 

I made sure to press down all the edges of the tape to make sure it was secure but 6 months later, it’s still holding strong! 

I do have clear sealant to paint over the seat area with but because of the crazy winter weather we’ve had, I just haven’t gotten a chance to do that yet. 

I love it. It’s the perfect addition to my craft room and now that the back isn’t messed up anymore, I don’t have to hide it.
