Watercolored Canvas

Sometimes I just like to get creative and let it go (sorry if you now have that song stuck in your head). When you just play around with art sometimes it really works and sometimes it really bombs. Look at it this way, you’ll never know unless you try it! Case in point – I love the look of the water colors, which is pretty popular right now. Since canvases were on sale at our local hobby store, I decided to play around with a watercolored canvas.  To start I grabbed a canvas that was on sale and two tubes of concentrated water color pigment that I thought would blend well together.  These water colors were $4 each and the canvas was 2 for $8 so the entire project so far for one canvas is $12.  Nice huh? I set the canvas up outside, propped against a wall with a very absorbent mat underneath to catch the runoff paint. I also grabbed two containers for mixing the paint, two paintbrushes and a pitcher full of water. I squeezed some of the paint into my container and added a little water to make it easier to work with.  Then I simply started drawing lines and dabbing paint in to let it run down the canvas. Then after a minute I would pour a tiny amount of water over it to make the color run and bleed.  I alternated the blue and green colors, trying to mix them but still keep the a little seperate at the same time. Sometimes I would let the paint sit for a minute before letting a little amount of water run over it. Other times I would wash it away almost immediate and just let it leave a tiny hint of color. Finally when I was happy with the background I laid it down flat on the ground and placed a few larger, more colorful blobs of paint on the canvas.  Then I lightly sprinkled water right on the top, adding a little bit more or less water as needed. After I had made some tiny splotches, it was time for the big ones. I added paint straight from the cup of both colors and tilted the canvas all different ways to get the final large splotches of paint. I also sprinkled water across the top to make more splotches and variations of colors. Really I just had fun and went with the flow. In the end, this was the result which I really love. I sprayed it with two coats of sealant so that it would be safe from water gun fights in the house (oh you know it’ll happen).  Even though I love it, it’s just not finished yet. I’ve been staring at it for a week, just trying to figure out the next move.  I’m not sure. What do you think? Is it something you would try in your own home?
