There’s a saying that I have found to be largely true, “When it rains, it pours”.
This week it has literally poured, for days. It has rain nonstop and when it wasn’t raining, it was freezing. The kids are bouncing off the walls. Outside it’s soggy and dreary, inside it’s perfect napping weather.
In a not so literal fashion this week we also had to buy a new dishwasher. It’s poured in the appliance dying category of our home.
When we moved in the previous owners had left us a dingy old vacuum that turned out to be a powerhouse! I loved that thing. In the past 3-4 months not only did that vacuum die but the one we already had also died. We bought the cheapest vacuum we could find because we couldn’t justify a fancy vacuum. Well… last week the new vacuum died. My floors are filthy, which is really nothing new.
Our glass stove top cracked two months ago and had to be replaced. Before that our washing machine had to be replaced because I threatened to take a baseball bat to it. That machine had issues and the baseball bat seemed like the best way to fix those issues. Mr. Byrd disagreed.
This weekend was spent boiling water in a pot on the stove to wash dishes.
When we removed the broken dishwasher to make sure it hadn’t leaked and damaged anything, we also had to disconnect the hot water and turn off the breaker to the microwave. Of course we didn’t realize that we wouldn’t be able to reconnect the hot water or turn the breaker back on until the new dishwasher is delivered later this week.
It has poured broken appliances.
However, washing every dish by hand and having to make hot chocolate the old fashioned way rather than microwaving it has the most we’ve dealt with lately. Honestly, that’s not that bad! I have renewed appreciation for modern day appliances and an increased vigor toward babying the double wall ovens in the kitchen because those are expensive!
I know some of you thought when you read the title of this post that I was talking about that post I wrote last week about the struggles and darkness that I deal with last week but it’s not.
It has poured joy and love over here lately. There’s been a lot of laughing and even more really bad jokes. The resident five year old thinks that just saying the word “butt” is a joke and breaks down into hysterics. I did take a few days off from blogging and from this site which enabled me to put energy towards other things such as cleaning out and organizing our homeschool supplies. I also found two hairbrushes inbetween the school books! If you follow me on Facebook than you will know that hairbrush sightings can be rare with three little girls loose in the house.
Yes it did pour the past few months in my life. We’ll just call 2014 a wash because of it. But the thing to remember is that nothing grows without water. If you ask my garden then you’ll figure out that nothing really grows unless you give it a lot of water. It just gets brown and wilted, trust me…. I know. So even though you’re not thankful for the flooding when it happens, it washes away the trash and brings growth to the good things.
This week the sun is supposed to show up again and it might be warm enough for us to get out of the house. The new dishwasher will be installed (by us which should be humorous) and I’m going to sweet talk the double oven and whisper to it daily affirmations of it’s greatness.
Then to celebrate all the goodness of life, we’re going to make things. There will be glitter for miles…. and no working vacuum in sight.
