Did you come here looking for ooey gooey eyeball cupcakes and ghostly goblins but the only fright you got was when you saw my picture over there on the sidebar?
There’s not any halloween crafts on Clumsy Crafter. Yes, there’s a few wayward pumpkin crafts but nothing with mummies or spiderwebs.
Truthfully, I just don’t like Halloween.
I remember loving halloween as a child. Then came the year where my mom said “you’re too old for me to buy you a costume. If you want to trick or treat you have to make your own.”
I have deeply regretted my decision to make my own costume that year since the image of that picture is forever burned into my brain.
But once I became an adult, things changed for me. I stopped seeing Halloween as being a fun chance to dress up and I started seeing the darkness behind it.
It’s hard to write about this because I don’t want to convict any of you that love Halloween. It’s my thoughts only and in no way do I expect you to share them.
I love seeing all the cute little kids coming around in their costumes.
You’ll see princesses, lady bugs and Supermen that will cause you to say “awww” uncontrollably and perhaps in a slightly embarrassing way. It can be fun!
But then you’ll see the people dragging their unhappy five year old along in a costume straight from a high end store and in your mind you start adding up the price tags. Usually when I get to $75 I stop adding.
Or you go into the store and see a costume made from that paper fabric that is so extremely cheap that you know you can buy for $3 on clearance after Halloween but before Halloween it’s $25.
One of the things that I think Pinterest has really inspired is for people to start making their own costumes again. I love that.
I just can’t bring myself to spend $50 on a costume for one night. I know that sometimes a child will spend months in that same costume until it smells so bad that you sneak it out under the cover of darkness. Then the $50 might be worth it. But maybe that child would have done the same thing for a $15 costume and you could have gifted someone else with a costume whom you know their parents can’t afford this year. You would still pay less money and delight even more children.
I just don’t get it.
Add on the candy that everyone knows is hiked up in prices before the holiday and all the parents wind up hiding afterwards anyway and the halloween decorations for the yards to the final bill. Corporate America is making a ton of money while we just so willingly give it away.
Isn’t there anything else we could give it to than a holiday that glorifies death and fright?
Oh but it’s just fun dress up.
Yes, for some it is just fun dress up and my kids do dress up. We go out trick or treating and get a huge bag of candy that we raid after they’re in bed.
But for every smiling happy toddler wearing an adorable bumblebee outfit, for every custom that represents good, you’ll see one that represents death or the new thing – super sexy.
Many costumes don’t just glorify death, they glorify killing.
There’s scary masks with knives going through the skulls and blood on everything.
It’s not a holiday that’s just fun – it’s a holiday that for so many represents more.
We make it fun and keep it within that frame of mind for ourselves, that it’s just fun. It’s not just fun, it’s a picture of darkness that for one night people get to live out loud.
Yes my kids are dressing up again this year. The oldest child wants to make her own costume (oh if she could only see my huge mistake in that area when I was her age).
We’ll spend the night at our church for a fall festival. Then we’ll come home and turn on the porch light and welcome a few trick or treaters.
Why are we doing that if I hate halloween? Because it’s not about me. My kids love it. Giving out candy to other kids is something they look forward to all year.
Yes I hate it but I have to get outside of myself. I could shelter them and hide them from the gory images that I hate but what does that teach them?
They know I hate Halloween and they know why but they know that I love them more. I’m going to teach them the truth that I hold true as a Christian, to choose things that are lovely and true, but in order to be a light in the dark – I have to be willing to step foot in the dark.
Maybe at the end of the day, that’s the best lesson I can give them.
So no, there won’t ever be Halloween crafts on Clumsy Crafter. But there will be plenty of fall and Christmas crafts. Oh and let’s not forget glue – there will always be glue! Where’s The Halloween Crafts On Clumsy Crafter?
